Developing a Culture of Safety in your Organization

Based on leading-edge organizational theory and case studies analysis, this workshop provides organizational and company leaders with the tools and knowledge to examine and enhance their organizational safety climate and culture -strengthening organizational buy-in for risk management and safety.

The workshop will introduce organizational leaders to the basic concepts of systems theory and error management.  The workshop is designed to create awareness of organizational/company culture that may influence risk management decisions, factors that lead to errors, and techniques to avoid, trap and mitigate errors so that managers can prevent incidents from occurring.

Workshop Objectives:

  • Managers will be able to assess their organizational risk management culture.

  • Managers will develop a basic understanding of Systems Thinking

  • Managers will be able to identify and assess common factors that lead to errors.

  • Managers will learn techniques to avoid, trap and, mitigate and errors.

As humans, we have developed cognitive process to deal with the routine and mundane by creating habitual behaviors.  We often time see only what we know and ignore relevant and often times critical pieces of information that may lead us to error.  “To err is to be human.” Or as Heimreich (1998) put it, “error is the downside of having a brain.”  Understanding that error is a constant and developing systems to compensate for human error is a challenge that all organizations face.  As organizations become increasingly complex, so does the need for human interaction leading to the potential for more human error to occur.  Error management examines complex cause and effect relationships and our mental models influenced and shaped by our beliefs and assumptions about how the world operates.
